Room 1

Hello Parents,

The time has once again come for a new school year! I am excited to see all of the wonderful learning that will take place in our room. This is my 22nd year at Heath.  Many of you have had children in my classroom over the years. I love teaching 2nd grade and look forward to working with your child.

This year we will build on our reading skills to become more fluent and use context clues to help with unfamiliar words. Expect to hear retellings of the stories your child has read as he/she practices summarizing accurately.   In writing we will learn to put a number of different types of sentences together to create a descriptive piece of writing. Building vocabulary will enable them to bring more depth to their writing by including interesting words. We will learn about dinosaurs, write a report, make an oral presentation and do a diorama.  Math this year will be more about addition and subtraction including regrouping. We’ll also learn about money, shapes, measurement, and telling time.

You can best help your child by making sure they read daily. I cannot emphasize this enough. Stories open new worlds for all of us. A proficient reader can take many wonderful journeys and learn about their world. As parents you can model the importance of reading when you read magazines, books, newspapers, and share with your child about them. From time to time throughout the year book orders will come home and that’s a great way to economically add to your home library. The Baldwin Park Library has an excellent children’s section and also offers homework help and access to computers. I would encourage regular visits.

If you are interested in working in the classroom, please let me know. I am often asked about school supplies and will gladly accept any donations.  Looking forward to meeting you and teaching your child. Go Huskies!

All the best,

Mrs. Mott
